 Sauk County: A Brief History

It was the spring of 1838. Three men just staked out their claims in what is now the present city of Sauk City. Slowly on, settlements were developed, and by the 1840s, Sauk County was officially established. Sauk County entered its pioneering phase in the 1840s-1860s. Surveying allowed for population expansion and created economic opportunities in wheat and hops farming.

The railroad industry began its journey west, and between the 1860s and 1870s, the rail line made its way into Sauk County. The railroad expansion brought abundant economic opportunities. Villages and Cities were chartered, and the American Farmer became a reliable source of food and industry to be shared throughout America. Dairy farming and crop farming were popular agricultural professions.

As with all booming counties, Sauk County saw its progression slow in the early 20th century but was revived after WWII when Industry and Tourism stimulated growth in the economy again.

Chief Yellow Thunder, Man Mound effigies, and Hulbert Creek Garden Beds are historically notable as influential people and places in Sauk County.
