La Crosse County. A Brief History
La Crosse County, beauty at every turn! From the gorgeous steep valleys and narrow ridges of the Coulees to the might and majesty of the Mississippi- La Crosse County is unmatched in the beautiful display of woodland and wildlife.
This beauty and bounty was known centuries earlier by the Sioux, Ojibwe, and Ho-Chunk Indian tribes, who frequented the area.
In 1841, a young man named Nathan Myrick arrived in what is now known as La Crosse. The Ho-Chunk Indian tribe welcomed him to the area, and after further exploration, Nathan he decided to stay and built a log cabin in hopes of starting a fur trading business.
Containing a perfect mix of prairie land, bluffs, and rivers, La Crosse County attracted many entrepreneurs in the lumber, railroad, Steamboat, and brewery industries.
La Crosse County’s success of today was built on yesteryears men and women entrepreneurs and pioneers. Without their hard work, La Crosse County would not be what it is today.
