Jackson County. A Brief History

The Winnebago Indians were the first settlers to occupy most of Jackson County.  After the Black Hawk War, they, as well as many other Indian tribes in the surrounding areas, were relocated to Minnesota.  The Winnebago found Minnesota displeasing and relocated and took possession of a reservation in Blue Earth, Minnesota.

According to legendary lore, in 1819, an expedition directed by a French Trader name Rolette reached the area that we now know as Black River Falls. While there, Rolette built a sawmill on Town Creek. Unfortunately, the Winnebago burnt down the mill and drove all the lumbermen away. For twenty-one years, that area remained uninhabited by whites till 1839.

Known for its abundant water supplied by the Black River, Jackson County remains well hydrated by four major rivers: Black River, Trempealeau, Bear, and Beef Rivers.

These rivers formed the gorgeous sand bluffs you see today. These rivers also contributed to the many sawmills and lumber companies that occupied Jackson County.

Bravery filled the souls of seventeen men, and in 1839, they returned to the Town Creek area to restart the sawmill. With this return, Jackson County continued to flourish- sharing its colorful lore of claims, fights, Mormons, Whiskey, and Baptist preaching.

The rich soil made for productive agriculture consisting of hay, cranberries, and a wide variety of grain cereals. The introduction of the railway grew agricultural demand, and in 1853 Jackson County was formed and named after President Andrew Jackson.
